How is 2017 treating you so far?

Yin-at-happe-for-yoga-newsletter-750x310How are you feeling as 2017 begins?

I have been asking my yoga students that question a great deal this month.  It seems that many people are facing health challenges as the New Year dawns.  If you are like me and are sensitive to world events, pollution, food, etc– you might be feeling a bit overwhelmed and for most of us, our health is a barometer of our emotions and the world around us.

So here are a few ways I am dealing with stress-related issues such as fatigue, musclmy feet on sand 225e aches, poor digestion and difficultly sleeping.

Instead of ramping it up during the day, I am slowing down.

I have been taking naps

I have been taking frequent short walks in nature

I have been shifting my yoga practice to a restorative and yin practice

I am not drinking tap water (too much chlorination and fluoridation). Spring water is a better choice according to my Chinese Medicine Doctor.

I am snacking on seaweed.  (a source of iodine, since so many of our natural sources are depleted)

I am drinking bone broth.

I am making my own foods with organic vegetables as much as possible.seaweed snack

I am using essential oils.  In fact, I made a mixture of coconut oil and oregano and applied it to my feet and my lower back started feeling better.

I am turning off the TV and going to bed early.

I am focusing on what is right in my body and my world and shutting out negativity.

When I feel stronger and can deal with the crazy world again, I will emerge a stronger, more centered self.  I hope this helps any of you who feel similarly.

Here is the thing.  As Danna Faulds says in one of my favorite poems of hers.   Let it all go. “Save your strength to swim with the tide. The choice to fight what is here before you now will only result in struggle, fear, and desperate attempts to flee from the very energy you long for. Let go.”

Thinking about death to start living

FullSizeRenderI have been pondering end of life issues lately.  It’s no wonder with watching my step dad die and observing all the swirling issues and emotions that accompanied this event.  Illness and death are scary.  I have tiptoed through life – taking as great a care of my physical and emotional health as I can –to avoid the inevitable.  Even saying the word Death has been scary for me.  Doctor’s appointments have also been faced with dread.  I don’t think I am alone.IMG_7793

So how to face our mortality with the same sense of gusto that one faces life is what’s on my mind.

Here are a couple of ideas I have run across in my reading and reflecting.

Be like Steven Jobs and wake up every day and look in the mirror and say “If this were the last day of my life, how would I spend it?”  If you are doing things you love with people and animals you love and not aimlessly, mindlessly going through the motions of your day, then you might feel OK about death.

Staying present in the moment.  So much time is wasted regretting the past and worrying about the future.  Really all that does is waste the precious moments of the present.

Slowing down and breathing.  Observe the quality of your breath.  Notice your heart beating.  Watching my dad die left me in awe of the strength of breath and the heartbeat.  The rest of his body was withering – ten days with no food and only a few sips of water– and yet there he was with his eyes closed but his heart was beating and his breath was still coursing through his body.  Our bodies and soul are amazing.  So is our desire to live.  So for me, no resolutions for this year, just reflection and focus on how to live so I am not so afraid of dying.  Just reflecting “honestly upon our present reality and consider how to build” on what is right in front of us. Maybe finding some serenity in the process.

The Holy Grail of Chakras

Crown chakra image

The Crown Chakra is the Holy Grail of Chakras—it’s the pinnacle—the highest level of your subtle energetic Chakra body

The seventh chakra is the connection between you, the world and whatever God you believe in.  And to be honest with you, it is not that attainable for most of us “everyday folk”.  But does that mean you should not try — no way. Enhancing your crown chakra in any shape or form will enhance your life. Raising your level of consciousness will ease “physical and emotional pain and release endorphins which create happy and blissful experiences for us,”  according to Ambika Wauters , who wrote The Book of Chakras. Chakras_map.svgAnd she adds, “Once we start living from and within the Crown Chakra, we start to be thankful for our lives exactly as they are.  … we accept  trials and hardships that have shaped our spirit.” In all of the readings I have done throughout my yoga training, it is the ritual of working toward higher levels of connection that enhance your live, not necessarily the goal of pure bliss or Samadhi as it is called in Sanskrit.  In fact, according to Vedic tradition, no goal can ever be guaranteed in yoga or life, so the daily practice becomes the goal.

In helping my students work the Crown or Sahasrara Chakra, which in Sanskrit means thousand petals, we spend more time in quiet reflection than in our other Chakra practices.  When I offer my students either doTERRA Rosemary  essential oil if they are having too many visions or Frankincense oil if they need assistance in accessing the higher realm, I invariably get few takers for the Rosemary and many for the Frankincense.

“Frankincense, considered a Holy oil, is used for meditative contemplation, for achieving tranquil states of mind, and for attaining spiritual liberation.  The spiritual and psychological benefits of Frankincense have long been recognized by many cultures and spiritual traditions. On a physical level, the oil of Frankincense helps with nervous system conditions. Because of the high levels of sesquiterpenes, a type of molecules that have the ability to cross the blood-brain barrier, Frankincense may help to oxygenate the pineal and pituitary glands, according to www.chakra-anatomy.com .Frankincense is so highly touted in treating a number of physical and emotional diseases and the medical community continues to research more and more of its health benefits.   To top it off, it smells great making it a top seller at doTERRA. Even though it is very expensive, I offer my students to try it topically to help with focus and meditation.frankincense banner

The Crown Chakra Yoga Practice

We do a variety of the hip and hamstring poses to get ready to meditate. See my  Youtube video on sitting comfortably in easy seat.

gentl neck stretch 300 by 225Andrea doing twist 300Tree pose 300dpi

Gentle neck stretches, side to side stretches and twists are done to make sure all blockages leading from the base of the spine to the crown of your head are cleared.  Tree pose is our balance pose to ensure our focus and connection with all living things.

An appropriate relaxation activity for activating the crown chakra is Yoga Nidra.  When I did thisyoga nidra image practice with my students recently, I had several students report some fascinating results.  One student reported being able to visualize the blue pointed star at all 61 points that I mentioned.  Another visualized a colorful Chinese dragon dancing.

I introduce my students to a variety of other ways to quiet their mind and feel connected to their higher self.  Visualizing the color purple,  chanting the OM sound or using either crystal bowls or a 108 bead mala to assist in meditating.  Each of us respond differently to the various approaches of this practice, so I give the students a sampling and encourage them to practice at home.  To find out more about my Chakra balancing series, please fill in this contact form.

Do you Trust your Intuition?

Third Eye Chakra banner

Balancing the Third Eye Chakra

I am going to share something very personal with you because I think it will help illustrate why working the third eye or Brow Chakra is so important.  When I was younger, I used to think every ailment that I got was going to be my last.  I ran from doctor to doctor seeking answers to every little strange ache and pain that cropped up in my life.  I also was afraid of everything– thunderstorms and earthquakes to name two of the big ones.  For me, it was a lack of knowledge, discernment and life wisdom that kept me imbalanced.  I had plenty of creativity and imagination (lol). I had a lot of work to do to develop faith in my inner wisdom.  Often work on the 6th Chakra comes with age, but some people are born wise or life hits them hard early in life, so they are faced with many big issues that can lead to development of this intuitive sense. According to www.multidimension.com, the brow chakra and the crown chakra are interconnected with two parts of the brain. “The pituitary gland is called the ‘seat of the mind’ with the frontal lobe regulating emotional thoughts such as poetry and music, and the anterior lobe regulating concrete thought and intellectual concepts. On the other hand, the pineal gland is known as the ‘seat of illumination, intuition and cosmic consciousness’. The pineal gland is to the pituitary gland what intuition is to reason.” If this Chakra is out of balance, physically you might be experiencing head aches, eye aches or be unable to sleep or have nightmares.

Yin-at-happe-for-yoga-newsletter-750x310

The following is an excerpt from the class I teach on the third eye chakra. I encourage my students to try one of several doTERRA essential oil blends– clary sage to reduce anxiety and brain fog or Frankincense to increase higher mental powers. Start in child’s pose –making sure to have your fists or a block touching the brow between your eyes. From there move into a downward dog, placing a block so that your forehead is touching something. Use blocks during the forward fold before coming up to standing. Do several  sun salutations– the first couple with your eyes open and then close your eyes to rely on your intuition to guide you through the sequence. During the balance work, we call upon the eagle again.  The eagle, as well as other birds of prey, have amazing vision.  They soar above everything and can see the tapestry of our lives.  Tapestry 600 dpiWithout this eagle eye, our lives look like the underside of a tapestry– a mesh of threads going every which way. We work through several other poses from a seated position– all with our head touching a block.  The simple act of touching a body part you are attempting to activate draws both your attention and energy there. Then meditate on the third eye by looking at a candle or closing the eyes completely and visualize a 5-pointed star with each point representing aspects of our higher brain functions.  I had one of my students report back to me that after we worked the third eye chakra, she had a dream that her mother was in the room with her giving her a hug.  She said it was not spooky, rather very comforting. Andrea in child's pose third eye routine

The fire staring practice is done first by softening your focus and staring at the flame as long as you can without blinking.  Follow that with gently closing your eyes and noticing any visions or images that crop up.  Try to allow thoughts and images to pass by as if they are clouds in the sky. If you are an auditory learner, hum the following seed sound— Aum, Aum, Aum. I invite my students to select a throat chakra affirmation to become their mantra as they leave the class.  Maybe one of them will speak to you.

Is it Kind, Is it True, Is It Necessary?

Throat chakracover photoWhen exploring your 5th chakra, you walk a fine line between speaking honestly from your heart and not hurting others.

If you have spent a good part of your life holding your tongue or feeling that lump in your throat because you are unable to speak up, you might be experiencing an imbalance in your throat chakra.  On the other hand, if you are like many people and you gossip or tell fibs, you could also be experiencing an imbalance in your throat chakra. Imbalances in this Vishuddhi chakra , which means purity in Sanscript, can affect how you communicate with the world. It is, as www.crystalvault.com explains, “the voice of the body. … the pressure valve that allows the energy from the other chakras to be expressed.” When it is in balance you can express “Your truth” and align your words with your “Purpose”.

From a purely physical stand point, imbalances in the 5th chakra, the throat, can manifest itself in the following disorders– sore throats, ear and tooth aches, coughs and colds, stiff necks and headaches. For many years, this was the chakra most out of balance for me.  When I did a lot of soul searching and work, I realithroat-chakra-essential-oilzed there were a number of factors–first, I was a school teacher and I often felt like my students and my own children were not listening and secondly, I often felt misunderstood by my friends and colleagues because I was so blunt.  This chakra which is about “purity, honesty and clarity and knowing what matters to you,” according to consciouslifenews.com, is a filtering system for what is going on in your lower chakras.  (see earlier post). In working with my own throat chakra issues and helping my students balance theirs, I offer two different essential oil blends — lavender blended with coconut oil, if they feel anxious about speaking their truth and an eucalyptus blend if they feel like they need to do less gossiping or be mindful of  hurtful language.

We explore the throat chakra through a variety of poses.

Andrea touching throat

You can either begin in a seated pose with your hips elevated to stretch out your neck (see mini YouTube Lesson) or you can do a standing neck release series (see YouTube Mini Lesson on Bikram Style Neck Release). If you have low back issues, I recommend starting in standing rather than sitting.  We will explore several types of shoulder releases — including cow face arms and eagle arms.  Be sure to do both sides. Many of the poses in this series will look familiar however, the focus will be on the neck and upper back. Then work to the floor.  (see YourTube Video Mini Lesson) In preparation for extended hand to toe pose (Utthita Hasta Padangusthasana), we will warm this pose up on the floor using a strap.  Stretch your left leg on the floor and flex the foot as if you are standing on that foot. Using a strap in your right hand and around your right ball of your foot, raise the leg to the sky and straighten it.  You may draw that foot off to the right side, but be sure, to maintain your left hip firmly planted on the ground.  In other words, don’t go too far off to the right.  Come back to the center and leave your leg up while letting go of your strap. Lower the leg and rest.  Repeat the entire sequence to the other side. Gently roll over and work your way safely up to standing (See Video on Yoga Foward Folds done Safely).   Practice two to three rounds of a sun salutation using the chin, chest, belly pose to transition from plank to cobra. Then working your way back to down dog and safely to standing. (See video for the throat chakra sunsalutations.) We are now ready to do the extended hand to big toe series .  I modify these poses because of my own body limitations. This series is also an excellent way to strengthen your arms and work on your balance.  We will repeat three times– each time making it a bit more challenging.  At any time feel free to do the earlier version of the pose.  Stand straight and tall and put your weight on your left foot, lifting your right knee and holding it with your right hand.  After a few breaths, bring your knee out to the right side however, do not go behind your normal range of motion.  Bring it back to the center and hold the knee up without your hand.  Change sides and repeat.  Second round… using the strap around the ball of your foot bring your right leg up extLions breathending in front.  Hold the strap just in your right hand. Keep your spine long.  Bring that leg out to the right side and back and then release the strap and hold your leg in place for at least two breaths. Repeat to the other side.  The full version of extended hand to big foot is not in my range, but it looks like the image in picture .  If you are doing full extended hand to big toe pose make sure to keep your spine long and do both sides. (click here for a quick video of this routine)

Our remaining poses will be done on the floor on our back.  We will do either plow or modified shoulder stand. Follow that up with fish pose.  Once again, I modify the pose.  Bridge pose with your head tilted back making a second bridge under your head and finally legs up in the air or against a wall. (see YouTube Video) Before going into Shavassana, I introduce my students to two interesting ways of working the throat Chakra.  From a seated position, we practice lion’s breath, which looks exactly as it sounds.  You take a deep inhale in and then when you exhale you roar like a lion releasing your neck and sticking out your tongue. Finally as we prepare for our meditation, we will practice the Jalandara Bandha, the throat lock, in which you inhale deeply and then hold your breath focusing on sealing off your throat  Release your breath and inhale and exhale normally.  Complete three rounds of this practice and then  breath normally as we prepare to chant Hum, the seed sound for the throat Chakra and visualize the color blue.  Affirmations for the throat chakra can include

How Yoga Helps the Heart

It goes beyond the Cardiovascular System

Heart chakra banner

When I tell my yoga students we are going to focus on the Heart Chakra (Anahata in Sanscript), there is usually a sigh of relief.  We have worked our way through the physical Chakras of root, sacrum and core. The Heart Chakra, fourth of the 7 energy wheels in our subtle body, lies in the space to the right of the heart along the spine.  This area of our spine is one of the strongest of our skeletal system for good reason.  It is protecting a very important physical organ—the heart.Chakras

We consider both the physical and emotional aspects of the Anahata chakra. Our heart can be very vulnerable depending on our life experiences. What may result is a heart chakra imbalance – respiratory issues, heart issues, depression, fatigue, to name a few of the possible symptoms. When you are unhappy, your thymus, which controls your hormones slows down, which can result in a general lack of thriving.  Emotionally an imbalance in this area can either lead to shutting down or just pretending to be happy.

“The fear of giving and receiving love blocks health, joy and goodness from coming into our lives,” according to Ambika Wauters, the author of The Book of Chakras who adds, “The heart’s unique intelligence is to remember love,  It never forget acts of kindness, friendship or love. “

In order to access love, one must be willing to be vulnerable.  At the beginning of class, I offer my students doTERRA geranium essential oil if they need to open up more or melalueca if they need to protect their heart more.  Both sides of this coin leave one feeling vulnerable.  It’s the paradox of the heart chakra, according to  http://nyapatrinos.blogspot.com/2015/08/chakra-series-yin-yoga-heart-chakra.htmlAndrea meditating “through humility, we find our power; through discipline, we find liberation; by cleansing the physical body, we become more mentally clear and attuned.”

We begin our practice in a seated pose to try and still the mind and tap into the heart; easier said, than done.  It takes practice to distinguish what your heart is telling you versus what your mind is chattering at you. One clue is if thought starts with love then it is coming from your heart. According to Yoga Journal’s Stephanie Snyder in a 2015 article, “Over time you will be able to observe both. This inner listening cultivates a discrimination. Discrimination supports skillful choices, which lead you toward your heart’s calling, your purpose. The result is bringing compassion and love into all you do.”

I invite my students to set an intention for the practice, which is often very personal.

It might include forgiving someone who has hurt you, or opening yourself up to love again after a bad relationship.  It could be working on loving yourself or trusting other people, or being less critical of people. Be sure to listen closely to your heart to ensure your intention rings true for you.

We do the following practice.  Feel free to attend one of my classes on balancing the Chakras or try the routine at home.

In a seated position we begin by loosening our neck and shoulders.  Be sure to sit on a blanket or bolster to protect your spine.  Sitting on a bolster helps lean your pelvic bones toward the front which keeps your back from rounding.  Half way through this neck and shoulder routine, change the cross of your legs to keep them from falling asleep. (2) Preparatory arm stretches will also include cow face arms and eagle arms (shown). Roll over to hands and knees.  A modified cat/cow with a child’s pose focus on shining your heart each time you stretch up and forward helps get problems “off your chest” (3)

Andrea stretching neck 225 tallAndrea doing eagle arms 225 highCat Cow 225 high

Rest in Child’s pose.  Then move into Puppy pose also known as Melting the heart.  (4) Draw your shoulders back toward each other, but be careful not to dump your belly. Move into thread the needle or revolved child’s pose. (5) This is an intense stretch for your shoulder.  Metaphorically speaking, your shoulders are the branches from your heart, which if strong can lead to generosity and compassion. Repeat on both sides.

Andrea melting heart poseAndrea threading the needle

Move into downward facing dog (6)—focusing on your shoulders drawing toward your back.  You might need to bend the knees a great deal to feel this in the upper back.  High lunges, Low lunges or Warrior 1 on both sides will be modified to reflect the opening of the shoulders. (7)  Do both sides. Our balancing series will include both Eagle Pose (8) and Dancers pose (9).  Both work the upper body.  Dancer pose opens up the heart while Eagle pose protects the heart. Do both sides.

3 DowndogAndrea doing warrior 1 with open heartAndrea doing eagle 225 tallAndrea doing dancers pose 225 high

Add two full sun salutations, focusing each move on a gratitude practice.  For instance when reaching to the sky, express thanks to the sun, the forward fold, thanks to the earth, half way up, thanks to your parents, all the way down, thanks to your children or friends, going through plank, thanks to yourself including your body. Upward dog, thanks to your mind, and coming back up, thanks to the higher being that you believe in. You can even chant these as you go through the sequence. This practice came from Seane Corne. Make sure to open your heart during your back bends.

IMG_9813IMG_9892

Perhaps the most vulnerable heart chakra pose is Camel Ustrasana (10)

The following description of this pose comes from Yoga Journal. “Camel is an upper-spine backbend that comes from narrowing in the belly and widening your hands to your hips and drive the legs and pelvis down as you lift the low belly, ribs, and chest upward.  Finally drop your head back gently as long as it doesn’t cause neck pain. Spend about 3 breaths here and repeat this pose three times. When you finish, sit on your heels, close your eyes, and enjoy the rush of being alive in an open-hearted body.”

Modified Fish Pose is offered as part of this series.  I do not do a full fish pose.   Fish Pose (Matsyasana) 11 is known as the destroyer of all diseases.  It stimulates your thyroid and para thyroid as it strengths the muscles of the upper back and back of neck and stretches your front body muscles.

Andrea doing camel 225 wideIMG_0003

We end the practice in a restorative version  of  Reclined Bound Angel Pose.  Supta Badda Konasana (12) Lie on on your back placing either two blocks or place a bolsters length wise and incline it with a block or two.  Lay back with your spine directly over the bolster. If you are using blocks make sure one block is right across your shoulder blades (for ladies, no lower than the bra line).  Once comfortable open your heart and allow your shoulders to sink towards the floor. Then place your feet together and let you knees fall out to the side.  Roll a blanket into a rope and wrap around your ankles or place blocks under your knees to support you. Visualize the color green, which protects your heart or pink to represent your heart as you relax in this pose. The heart seed mantra is YAM.  Breathe in unconditional love for yourself and others.  Exhale and release old hurts, regrets, anger and grief.

Are you a Warrior or a Servant? Exploring the Manipura Chakra

Yellow flower wide shot manipura chakraThe Manipura Chakra is not only strength in your abdomen but also strength in  your convictions.

Are you a warrior or a servant? That is the one of the questions to ask yourself when exploring the Manipura Chakra, the third of the seven energy wheels that start at the base of your spine. (for basic explanations of the Chakra system see this earlier post ) Located in the Solar Plexus region of your body, the Manipura Chakra is considered your energetic wheel of strength.  It is commonly known as the core.  Yellow is the color associated with this Chakra, which makes sense since the sun is considered the ruling element of the Solar Plexus. Energy here provides the fire needed to help digest your food and the world.

Chakras_map.svg

Determining if you Chakra is Over-active or Under-active

If your chakra is over-active, according to www.oneworldhealing.net,  “you may be judgemental or critical – and you will easily find fault in others. An overactive solar plexus chakra can turn you into an arrogant, self-centered power grabber. You end up chasing name and fame to the exclusion of everything else. Soon enough the ‘my way or the highway’ lifestyle inevitably results in dysfunctional relationships and high levels of stress.” according to www.do-meditation.com.

“If this chakra is under active, according to www.oneworldhealing.net,  it can cause severe emotional problems. You may have a lot of doubt and mistrust towards the people in your life, and worry too much about what other people might think about you. You may also run on “auto pilot” avoiding your feelings of depression orchakra picture courageous anxiety; you may feel afraid or alone when you start to look at what you have been avoiding. You also may feel that you are not good enough and be seeking a constant approval of others. “A blocked third chakra could lead to low self-esteem, hyper-sensitivity to criticism and attention seeking behavior. The resultant indecisiveness, poor self-confidence and self-image, and fear of rejection can prevent you from accomplishing important tasks and turning dreams into reality. Both over-active and under-active Manipura Chakra can lead to physical problems such as digestive disorders and anxiety.

Of all the Chakras, Manipura is the one mostly closely associated with your ego. Your identity including feelings of self-worth, self-esteem and self-confidence is often established in your teens.   As an adult, it affects your feelings of personal power and freedom of choice, according to Ambika Wauters, author of the The Book of Chakras.

In teaching a Yoga class on the 3rd chakra, I offer my students the following doTERRA essential oils — Bergamot if they feel like they need to fortify themselves or Wintergreen if they are feeling overly aggressive.   Bergamot is a member of the citrus family and helps one feel more secure and abundant.  Wintergreen has a cooling effect.  Learn more about doTERRA oils by checking out my information page.

Here is a Manipura Chakra Yoga Routine.  Feel free to do at home or join me for one of my public offerings of Yoga.

Throughout the practice (shown above and described below)be aware of your strength, which should give you confidence to move through life’s changes. Pictures are in order from left to right and top to bottom. Start in child’s pose Balasana and focus on your breath.  Feel the ground supporting you offering you safety and security.  If you are undergoing a major change in your life or are feeling ungrounded, affirm yourself with a statement such as “I have the strength to weather these changes and I have a right to the life I chose.” Move into cat Marjaiasana cow Bitilasana stretch. Coordinate the next series with your breath.  Then move into Balancing Table Pose dandayamna-bharmanasana. Raise the arm as you inhale and lower as you exhale.  Repeat three times.  One breath in between and then three times on the other side.  Then raise your leg as you inhale and hold it for three complete breaths.  You can add your opposite arm to make the balance and core work more challenging.   Rest in child’s pose (picture 1). Whenever you need to rest your wrists, go back to child’s pose. Move into a cat cow stretch with one leg bending and bringing your knee toward your  nose compressing your abdomen .   Then hold in plank Kumbhakasanafor three to eight counts.   You can modify on your forearms or hands and knees -Dophin Plank.  Move back into a downward dog -Adho mukha śvānāsana , making sure to engage both your inner thighs and your abdomen.  Move in and out of downward dog and plank several times—generating heat and becoming aware of your core strength. Come up to the top of your mat by bringing one left forward and end up in a Forward Fold. Safely come up to  chair pose Utkatasana (7). Be sure to engage your core and fronts of your thighs. There are many ways to both amplify and modify chair pose depending on how much or little you need to stoke the fires of your solar plexus.  If you have a strong sense of yourself, you might not need to push as hard.  If you tend to be afraid to try new thinAndrea meditatinggs, then pushing yourself may allow you through this challenging experience may develop the courage you need. High Lunge with or without a twist Utthita Ashwa Sanchalanasana . Repeat on both sides. Move into Triangle and/or Reverse Triangle Pose Utthita Trikonasana(shown above). Come down to seated and set up for Boat Pose Navasana  which if done properly put yours puts your spine in a sated V.  Because this pose requires so much core strength,  I am modifying it by holding my legs with my hands. (12) Moving Bridge works the core and strengthens the back from the ground. Be sure to feel the front body engaging and to not squeeze the buttocks. Setu Bandha Sarvangasana. Make sure to do Constructive Rest. Savasana .

A great way to finish  the Manipura chakra work, is to do a seated meditation using the following seed sound mantra– RAM, RAM, RAM.  Notice how this sound actually causes a vibration in your solar plexus region. Remember, the fire at our navel center is vital to your spiritual growth and fulfillment!

Staying Healthy in September

Why is September so hard on many of us?

Letting Go Of Summer

As we move from summer to fall, you may notice that your energy levels begin to change.  In both Traditional Chinese Medicine and in Indian Medicine known as Ayurveda, there is a good reason for this. Seasonal changes signal changes in our physical and emotional constitutions. “Traditional Chinese Medicine views the environment as an extension of the body. Therefore, living in harmony with the season helps to keep your body healthy,” according to www.eggsfromtheeast.com.  If we do not follow the rhythm of the seasons, it often shows up as dis-ease in the body. There are several ways to ease the transition into fall and possibly prevent your body from shutting down.

1) Go to bed earlier and rise earlier.  The sun is setting earlier and our circadian rhythms shift as well.

2) Eat fewer salads and smoothies and switch to cooked foods and soups. This is especially important if your primarily a Vata dosha (see my blog post  for further explanation).

3) While summer was about going and doing, fall is about reflecting, organizing, clearing out and preparing for winter. Even though we do not really have cold winters, there is still a seasonal clock at work here.

4) Add Yin yoga to your routine.  My yin yang yoga class is now Fridays at 9 am at Happehatchee.

While the yoga may poses look familiar, they have different names and  different purposes in Yin

For instance, Cobblers pose (Baddha Konasana) in the Yang style of yoga is called Butterfly in Yin.  Butterfly is a slightly wider -legged pose, looking more like a diamond and it is often held for three to five minutes.   In this pose you relax all muscles and let your upper body hang without focusing much on alignment.

Yin yoga emerged out of the Taoist traditions of China.  Just as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Indian medicine (Aruyveda) come from a common tree, so do Yin and Hatha yoga.  Here in the west, Yin has been catching on, particularly among athletes, martial artists and people who want a more grounding, quieter type of yoga practice.   While Yang yoga often involves flowing sequences with 40 or more Asanas (poses) being held for 3 to 5 breath rounds, a Yin Yoga sequence might include just 10-15 poses each held for three to 10 minutes.

Bernie Clark, who studied under some Yin Masters and authored YinSights, says “Yin targets connective tissues… (ligaments, joints and bones, and is complimentary to the dynamic styles of yoga, which are focused on muscles.”  For many tennis players, runners and other athletes whose sports are so dynamic, having a less dynamic yoga practice can be very balancing.  For anyone suffering from injuries or recovering from illnesses, Yin may be just the right prescription for health.

The three basic rules of Yin according to Mr. Clark, are

1) Come into the pose at an appropriate depth.  One of my teachers described that as just short of your edge.  So come to your edge and ease off just enough so that you can maintain this position for the duration. You should feel sensation, but not pain.

2) Resolve to remain still except for your breathing.  You may not always succeed, especially if you are naturally a fidgety person, but maybe say to yourself when you want to flee, I will stick with it ten more seconds.

3) Hold the pose for a length of time upward of a minute, preferably 3-5 minutes.  This is important for several reasons.  For one thing, it takes at least 45 seconds before your muscles stop contracting.  It is necessary for your muscles to relax in order to go deeper into the connective tissue matrix of your body.

Mr. Clark describes what is often an initial reaction to practicing Yin. “Your mind starts to play tricks on you,” he says.  You want to fidget or escape.  But by breathing into the pose and paying attention to the sensations without judgment, you learn to stay calm and still in the midst of sensation, which our minds translate into suffering.  This skill, with practice, can translate off the mat in everyday life

I was first introduced to Yin Yoga 10 years ago when one of my favorite Yoga teachers in Charlottesville, Virginia came back from a workshop and spent the next five Sundays exploring Yin with us.   She would talk to us throughout the long held poses to keep us from releasing the pose too soon.  Her commentary and her eclectic style of teaching kept me coming back for more. Little did I know then, that I would follow in her footsteps.  She was also a school teacher, as I am.   In the fall of 2014 during the Yoga teacher training at Joyful Yoga, I was again, introduced to Yin Yoga through two of my teachers.  I was immediately drawn to the grounding nature of this style of yoga and the way my body felt after the practice was finished.

If you are interested in exploring the Yin Yoga Practice, come to  my Friday 9 am Yin/Yang Yoga class at Happehatchee.  The cost is just $10 and you get the added benefits of practicing Yoga in Nature and supporting a beautiful not-for-profit eco spiritual center that is working actively to protect land in Estero . I am also available to do private yoga classes.  Schedule your class today.

Its a Wonderful Life

its a wonderful life image 3

I have been feeling like Jimmy Stewart in the movie It’s a Wonderful Life” !

This summer, I was given the chance to go back in time to visit my college roommate, my family, and my grade school friends and through this journey, I realized the impact I have had on other people.  Don’t get me wrong, I never thought I was useless, but I also never realized how a smiling, positive child who wrote this in her yearbook “ I still believe in love, the best is yet to come” could have left an indelible positive impression on so many people.  It was a reminder to me (40 years later) that all of us put out energy every day that either improves people’s lives including your own or makes them worse.  And through our positive energy we can  affect physical and emotional  health and well-being.

Grateful for RPCoaching  Grateful for flowers 225  Grateful for food

Here are a ten ways (some may surprise you) to keep your energy positive for you and all around you.

  1. Be grateful – as Mindvalley Founder,Vishen Lakhiani author of The Code of the Extraordinary Mind, says, Gratitude is the key part of advancing your Blissipline practice. Quoting now, in a study by Robert Emmonds, PhD and Michael Mccullough, PhD “people who simply wrote down five things they were thankful for from the previous week showed a 25 percent difference in happiness levels compared to people who wrote down five negative things from the week.”
  2. Forgive everyone who has hurt you. You don’t have to tell them, but you really do need to release the anger from inside you, which ends up hurting your energy more than the person you are angry with. Lakhiani also has some interesting evidence of the power of this practice.  According to Lakhiani, forgiveness has been shown to increase the Alpha waves when looking at brain scans and it turns out that Alpha Waves are linked to higher levels of creativity, empathy and compassion.
  3. Surround yourself with beauty – flowers, cute dogs, music that inspires. It is hard to stay unhappy when you are surrounded by beauty.
  4. Turn off as many of the negative messages that you can, including TV and social media. I do not read any rants anymore.  It upsets me and I really don’t believe ranting ever leads to positive change.  I once read getting angry about things is like stabbing yourself. Especially if someone else has figuratively stabbed you with whatever action you didn’t like.  Why do you want to put a second knife in your belly?
  5. Do kind things for other people, whenever possible. It is amazing how good you feel when you are charitable to others. A recent study quoted in Mindbodygreen showed that random acts of kindness lead to longer feelings of happiness than shopping.
  6. Figure out what it is that you like about yourself and remind yourself of your good qualities daily. “I have a nice smile.  I make people laugh.  I work hard” are some of the qualities I like about myself.
  7. This is the surprising one. Be careful of what you eat.  All food has energy.  Make sure the energy from that food is clean and positive.  In other words, the food should be made with love and should be grown in a way that does not put toxic energy into you.
  8. Make your home a sanctuary —keep it clean and uncluttered when possible. I have not studied Feng Shu, but I know I feel better when my home looks, feels and smells clean.
  9. Make sure your relationships, your career and your creative energy bring you joy. Nothing is perfect, but you are much more likely to attract and manifest positive energy if you are engaged in what you are doing. (In other words, find something that allows you to get into the flow) Lahkiani calls this “Bending Reality”
  10. Exercise and meditate daily – take a walk in nature, do yoga, sit in silence and breath and allow the collective positive energy of the Universe to infuse every cell with this living breathing sphere we live on known as earth.
