Design Challenges are like high-octane fuel for creativity

I am so fortunate to be part of a design team that regularly gets challenged by ZnetShows– a wholesale and retail distributor of cultured sea glass, crystals and metal findings. This summer ZnetShows was releasing a new line of their sea glass shapes and they wanted to see what a group of us artists could come up with, creatively speaking. I was allowed to pick tZnet shows blog challenge blue and clear sea glass unusual shapeshe colors, but they selected the shapes. Ever since my youngest went off to University of Florida, I can’t seem to get royal blue out of my head.(color shown in catalogue link is different than mine)  I gave the orange a break this time around and went with an opaque white color. This is the typical process for my designs.

I lay the beads out in what I think makes sense and then I change my mind, often dozens of times until I find what is beautiful, unique yet wearable jewelry.  This time I came up with earrings, anklet, bracelet and my favorite– the necklace.

The Follies of Youth and Ego

Andrea doing mountain brook on the matWhat are we trying to accomplish on the Yoga Mat?

It is not the Yoga Asana we want to perfect but the control over our minds and integration of our mind, body and breathe. When you are doing a yoga pose, maybe ask yourself this question, ”Do I have to do an extreme version of this pose to accomplish this goal?” For many of us, the answer is no. Andrea doing supported eagle pose I have been participating in a push-up challenge to raise awareness of issues facing our vets and if I had attempted the full push up on my first day of the 22 day  challenge, I would never have been able to complete the challenge.  Instead I have been building my strength with modified push-ups and guess what, even without doing the extreme pose, I am getting stronger every day.  I am toning my arms without injury to myself. And accomplishing a greater goal — not giving up even when facing obstacles such as an injured shoulder and wrist and upper spine scoliosis.

Here is another way to look at this dilemma of doing an extreme pose versus listening to your body. I am a competitive tennis player and have been so since I was 15 years old.

For years, I thought if I hit the ball harder and outran all my opponents, I would win. Sometimes I did, often I did not. As I have aged and faced more and more tennis related injuries from my follies of youth and ego, I have come to realize that my best weapon on the court is control over my mind and body.  It is when I integrate breath, mind and body and calmly see the greater picture of the court including the ball, my opponents and my partner, that I experience the Zen of Tennis.

In a recent Yoga Journal article, Yoga teacher Tias Little explained that that most of us need to dial back our movements to 80% and mix in micro-movements with larger movements in order to prevent injury and rehabilitate from injury.  “Some somatic therapists suggest it’s the small movements that really open up the whole arena of the nervous system, because the slow and soft and small movements allow the brain to track what’s happening,”she said. The bottom line, according to Little, for all of us who want yoAndrea close up mountain pose 2ga to be therapeutic, is to track “sensation in each movement and take mental notes”.   In other words, we need to become the observer/witness as well as the participant in our own practice. I often tell my students that once they feel safe and understand what the pose looks like, to close their eyes and feel into the pose without the distraction of what others are doing. As in tennis, yoga and life –focus and awareness of your internal landscape first will help you sense the external world around you and interpret in a calmer more authentic way.

To experience my unique approach to Yoga, you can catch me Mondays at Gateway Country Club, Tuesdays at Chicos headquarters, Wednesday at Happehatchee (see website), Thursdays at Fyzical on Metro, Fridays at Happehatchee.  I am also available for one on one and small groups at your location. Sea Glass and College Spirit provide the Creative Spark for new jewelry designs

cover summer 2016

I am fortunate to be included in a team of designers nationwide that are asked periodically to showcase how to use cultured sea glass from ZnetShows. This summer’s on-line publication features all of my University of Florida spirit jewelry.  I made two pairs of earrings, a bracelet, a necklace and several anklets.  Check out my features on pages 61 (Gator Pendant), Pages 81 Gator Nation Bracelet, and pages 94 and 95 (Gator Spirit Earrings and Anklet). There are many other beautiful designs by a variety of jewelry designers in the magazine as well.

So what is sea glass and what is cultured sea glass, you may be asking?

All glass categorized as Sea glass or Beach glass is made from recycled man made objects such as bottles. Natural beach or sea glass is unaltered.  So it looks rougher, has pores from the natural weathering processes of the sea, and comes in fewer colors.  The sea glass I use from ZnetShows is also recycled glass (not collected on the beach), but the company cultures it by tumbling, dying and putting holes in its products.  This makes cultured sea glass less organic, but easier to work with as a designer.  If you want more information about their beads, check out this page.

Yoga, Essential Oils and Healthy Food when you are Vacationing

Andrea in front of the vehicleHow many times have you returned from vacation only to say, “I need a vacation after this vacation!”

Mark and the dogs in Paducah KentuckyIt is a tricky balancing act to have fun and still stay healthy when you are not in your own home, doing your own routine.  This summer, I was determined to figure out how to stay healthy on a 4,000 mile, three-week road trip with my husband and two dogs.

Here are a few tips I picked up and so far they seem to be working (I still have to drive 2,000 miles home).

  1. Bring lots of healthy snacks (carrots, dates, raisins, apples, grapes, celery, nuts)
  2. Bring essential oils (but keep them in a cooler) Heat makes them lose their potency
  3. Every two hours take a stretch or yoga break
  4. Bring a neti pot and rinse out your nose with warmed-up, distilled water and neti wash salts, not table salts.
  5. Stay present so you can notice all the amazing natural and man-made events going on around you (this can also help you avoid an accident)
  6. Sing, laugh and breath (especially if you can’t control what’s going on around you)
  7. Visit the local yoga studios.  Many have drop in rates and its amazing how re-invigorating it is to learn from some one new.

More Details about Yoga Poses on the Road

I always bring a mat, but if you don’t have one, borrow a towel. Do a simple series of hamstring stretches, twists, child’s pose and sun salutations.  These poses will keep your back, hips and hamstrings limber. At truck stops or in public places, you can do standing poses such as half moon, triangle or the warrior series, which help with fatigue and digestive issues.

More Details about Using Essential Oils on the Road

Each morning, I take a drop of DigestZen and three to four drops of lemon and put them in my water. Next its oil time for mood enhancing –Balance if I am nervous, Frankincense if my brain is road weary, Peppermint for a pick me up.  My portable medicine cabinet has Breathe for respiratory issues, Deep Blue for muscle aches and On-Guard to protect from illness. I also bring Melalueca and Lavender for skin irritations. I carry a portable diffuser for car odors and use my essential oil diffusing bracelet to easily get the aromatic effects of these great health enhancers.

The Joys of Teaching Magnified in Nature

camp Andrea on the floor teaching

The greatest challenges offer the greatest rewards

Case in point, the week-long watershed education camp I directed at Happehatchee in June involving middle school age children.  Preparing for this camp kept me up for weeks.   You might be thinking “that’s not very yogic of you!”  You are right, I know I am not supposed to worry about things like this – I preach skills for coping daily to my yoga students like being in the present moment and breathing through stress.  But it had been 15 years since I last spent this much time with students in an outdoor setting.  And I had never done so in the hot, stormy Southwest Florida summer. In fact, the week before camp began, we had an unusually early tropical storm.  Zika virus threats, kids running a muck, my counselors forgetting to come and help me were some of my nightmares leading up to camp.  But like so many things we worry about in life, this was not the disaster I imagined, but an amazing experience all around.

Camp all of us in the canoes and kayaks day 4          Camp Evan falling as Savannah looks on

Here is a sampling of the Eco-camp’s greatest moments:

A young girl comes to camp.  The first day she doesn’t say a word, the second day she begins to smile. Day three she is participating fully and on day 4, she is basically doing all the work in a canoe that I share with her. Quietly she whispers “Can I go in the river tomorrow?”

camp Arcelly confident in the canoe

The high schoolers not only show up on time every day,  they bring friends to help.  When one of them is leading an activity, the other young people are cleaning up and getting ready for our next adventure without me even asking them.

The campers eagerly participate in a water cycle game, a fashion-a-fish art activity, and a skit simulating the effect of tides on critters. They build a watershed,  play water games and conduct biological, chemical and physical tests on the river.   The campers decide they will learn science vocabulary bingo words better by teaching the older counselors and myself the words. And if this weren’t enough, they collect trash, discuss world events and twice a day, do yoga and learn how yoga has many of its roots in the natural world. Every day, I go home exhausted but exhilarated by their enthusiasm for our river and their passion for learning.

Let nature and positive young people sooth your soul

I am encouraged by the beauty of nature and openness and caring of many of our youth!

camp Savannah et all looking at turtle

How do you describe the curiosity of young people who are given the tools and guidance to figure out for themselves real world science or are allowed to work together in a way that allows them all to shine? How do you describe the wonder in the face of a teenager experiencing nature up close and personal for maybe the first time? How do you describe the confidence that a teenager develops when he or she is put in charge of a group of younger campers? How do you describe the camaraderie developed in a beautiful setting such as Happehatchee Eco Center in Estero Florida when  young people come together from different schools with the purpose of finding out if their beloved Estero River is healthy and what to do to protect it. Rather than try to describe it, I will take you on a journey of pictures through the Happehatchee River Watchers Program and Summer Eco Camp.

This environmental education program was made possible thanks to Charlotte Harbor National Estuary Program (CHNEP), Wells Fargo Bank and the amazing staff and volunteers of the Happehatchee Eco Center. To read more about the program and what we learned about the Estero River, read on. Please feel free to comment and share because in troubled times, we all need positive people and beautiful nature to uplift our spirits.

Sacral Chakra the Seat of your Creativity

sacral chakra 675

How do you know whether a Chakra is in balance or not?

How do you know which Chakra is out of balance and the bigger question, why is out of balance? As my yoga students and I have been exploring Chakras the past two months, we have answered these questions by conducting an inquiry into our bodies, minds and hearts.

During our Sacral Chakra Yoga class, we used several essential oils to deepen our Chakrasappreciation for our sensual self – Wild Orange  and the other citrus oils such as Bergamot are uplifting and encouraging. When we feel stuck or ravaged by life and age, our sacral area can go dormant.  If you have ever felt like you are sleeping walking through life – just getting through your day without feeling love or passion, you might be experiencing a Sacral Chakra imbalance.

Here is the routine we did for balancing our sacral chakra.  Feel free to try this at home.  Of course, you can contact me through my website.

First we tap into our spine and sacral area at the base of our spine by moving through a cat/cow sequence on hands and knees, making sure to inhale when your belly drops and head lifts and then exhale as you pull your navel to the spine looking  down at your knees (1) (2).  To keep moving this lower area of our spine in another direction, we then look sideways over our shoulder doing a C curve, making sure to keep our back in the table top position as we wag our tail the same direction. (3) Coming up on your knees, extend one leg to the side balancing and reach away from your outstretched leg. Then reach toward your outstretched leg. (4) (5) Do this Gate lock pose on both sides. Carefully come up to standing perhaps through a safe forward fold and set up  for Warrior 2. (6) To release the  front hip in this pose, come up on the ball of the front foot briefly (7) and then lower (8) being sure your knee remains behind your toes to keep them safe.  Repeat on both sides.  Lift your arm straight up to the sky with the front knee bent, stretch out your side body in a Reverse Warrior. (9) Repeat this post which is also known as Exalting the warrior on both sides.  A wonderful balance for activating your creative nature is Dancers Pose (10) If you need to set up next to a post or wall and then release your forward hand this is a great way to access this pose safely. Make sure to do this pose on both sides as well (noting any differences between the sides, without judgement).  Your body should be warmed up sufficiently to do Pigeon Pose, known as the king or queen of hip openers. (11)  Notice how I am using a bolster to even out my hips in this deep pose.  You can stay up right or fold forward to feel this pose deeply in both the front and the back of the sacral area. If you have knee issues, pigeon  should be down lying on your back.  Your last pose is a seated cobblers or butterfly pose. (12) Elevating hips on a blanket can keep your pelvis and lower back safe in this pose.  While in this pose, you might want to say the following 2nd chakra mantra VAM, VAM, VAM.

End your practice in Savassana.

Savasana

When you balance your 2nd chakra, you enable yourself to experience joy and creativity without the need to overdo it.  You take good care of your body with healthy food and clean water.  Your emotions are balanced.  Leave your comments or questions below.  Namaste.

I wish you health and joy in your day!

Practicing Yoga Poses Is Not Enough

Andrea working with yoga students

This is a strange comment coming from a yoga teacher, but the longer I practice yoga, the more I realize that yoga asanas alone, are not the key.  Yoga has to be part of an overall health and life strategy, which includes eating well, staying hydrate, sleeping the right amount and at the right time, attending to your emotional health and last, but not least, working to eliminate toxics from your life and this world.

doterra 600dpi Andrea smiling pouring into diffuserThis is why I have become a doTERRA Wellness Consultant.   I do not take this role lightly as I have developed a deep understanding of toxic chemicals and their effects on the environment and us.

I began researching toxics 30 years ago as a news reporter. My many environmental stories included uncovering asbestos contamination in a Miami school in the early 80’s, the landfill crisis which left a garbage barge circling  the NY Harbor for weeks,  and the decimation of the Hopi lands in Arizona by a deal made between the U.S. government and the Navajo tribe ( just to name a few).Andrea broadcasting smallWhen I left the field of reporting, I worked for a number  of environmental organizations including Campaign California (an anti-nuke group) and the Virginia Chapter of the Sierra Club.  I ultimately co-founded and operated two environmental education organizations in Charlottesville, Virginia (C.A.R.T) Charlottesville-Albemarle-Recycle-Together and E.E.C. (The Environmental Education Center).  I went back to the University of Virginia to advance my knowledge of science and teaching (receiving two additional degrees) in order to enter the classroom full time as a environmental science and earth science teacher.  The Golden Apple Award I received was based on a project I did with the students on schoolyard habitats at Monticello High School.

Ten years later, I have narrowed my advocacy work from the saving the earth to saving individuals including myself.

So I use my yoga teaching platform, my writing and my work with doTERRA to spread the word about living a cleaner life as a way to exert some control over our health.

DoTERRA Essential Oils can be used a in a variety of ways to support your health goals. I am here to help. Here is a sampling of how I use them –doterra Andrea opening bottle

1) I diffuse them to assist in the purification of  air or to create a better atmosphere in my home emotionally.

2) I inhale them directly to combat seasonal allergies and to fight off indigestion and headaches.

3) I dilute them with coconut oil or other pure oils and apply them directly to the skin where they support my body in the following ways– anti bacterial, anti fungal, anti inflammatory and anti viral.

4) I mix them with distilled water and spray them on my body to keep insects away.

5) I am replacing my chemically-filled dryer sheets with wool dryer balls infused with the oils.

6) I clean my counters with a safe doTERRA mixture rather than using harsh chemicals that can contribute to our liver and kidneys working twice as hard to flush our bodies of toxics.

7) I am saving money by making my own hand wash rather than purchasing dozens of the liquid hand soaps that have hard to pronounce chemical concoctions in them.

8) I make cooling drinks with cucumbers and peppermint oil.

9) I bring a bottle of the lemon essential oils to restaurants and add them to my water rather than use real lemon because I am not sure who has handled the lemons and if they have been washed.

10) I use doTERRA toothpaste, shampoo and conditioner because I want to be able to limit my exposure to harsh chemicals that may be fine for now but could be building up in my system.

11) I add them to my shower, which relaxes me right before going to bed and assists in me getting a good nights sleep.

12) I use them in my yoga and meditation practice to aid in the physical, spiritual and emotional practice.

Most importantly, I am handing more of my daily aches and pains without advil, allergy medicines, sleeping pills, pills for indigestion, pills for sinus relief, etc.

There are many essential oil products being sold in stores and on the market.  But I have researched doTERRA and I feel secure with their 9 step quality control and certification of purity and I like them as a business.  They are putting their money where their mouth is — not only selling these products but working directly with the growers to ensure safe and sustainable practices.

There are three ways I can help you. These services are free.doterra Andrea smiling in front of all products

I offer one-on-one wellness consultations.  You may schedule by contacting me through my website contact form.

I offer classes.  I am trying to do one a month, either at my home or your home. If you host a class, you can earn free products.

I  offer information in most of my yoga classes. See my schedule of classes or contact me personally.

I know it is hard to change habits and in fact, there are many more ways I am exposed to toxics that I am not ready to change.  I still get my hair dyed and I wear store bought make up, but I am determined to do what I can to be healthier and I invite you to join me in this journey of health. Use this contact form to schedule a  free doTERRA wellness consultation.

I wish you health and joy in your day!

The River Came Alive

May 1 Heading out to the river

Third time is the charm, at least that is what I have heard

On Sunday, May 1, four local high school students, one FGCU graduate student, one Happehatchee volunteer, my husband and I hit the jackpot– environmentally speaking. We headed out in canoes for our third  Estero River Monitoring Day, thanks to Happehatchee and the Charlotte Harbor National Estuary Program.   With their funding, this small group of committed high schoolers has been monitoring the river once a month since late February.

May 1 fun on the river     May 1 Savanna taking notes

May 1 Annie and Savannah collecting macro     May 1 girls looking surprised

May 1 Jason doing temperature     May 1 turtle

Our first two trips yielded very little in the way of biological diversity, but this time something was different.  Maybe it was the river blessing that Happehatchee had participated in, but as scientist, I was looking for some data that could reveal why the river was teeming with life this day. My theory, which I need to explore further, is that with our area having received so much rain during the months of January and February, produced conditions that were not natural for this part of Southwest Florida.  In other words, the ecological conditions were altered just enough to affect the population of the bottom dwellers known as macro invertebrate.  On the other hand in recent weeks, we have had almost no rain, which mimic the normal conditions for a Florida winter.

Our chemical tests revealed some interesting effects from lack of rain and the disappearance of our winter human guests. At one of the stations we have been monitoring, the Estero River salinity was way up– four times higher than it had been in our previous visits.  However, we had nitrogen numbers of 0, water temperature in the low 70s,  a Ph level of 7, excellent oxygen levels, and the turbidity, which is how clear the water is, allowed us to see almost 2 meters deep.

May 1 kids looking at data     May 1 hands in muck

Macro Invertebrate Counts Using Save Our Streams Protocal

Month Counts (diversity-not numbers) Water Quality
February 1 (clam in tolerant range) Poor
March 4 (clam and snail in tolerant range) Poor
May 1st 18 (3 from excellent, 4 from moderate, 1 from tolerant) Good

The students also noticed  thousands of minnows, thousands of baby shrimp, several species of fish and they heard many birds. The students were excited by these findings, but were perplexed as well.   How could higher salinity lead to more bottom dwelling critters?  How do our readings compare with readings further upstream and what conclusions can we draw about the river? The students will meet one more time under this grant and then help me with a Happehatchee middle school camp as counselors for younger students during the early summer.  One disturbing part of our adventure was witnessing some of the poor behavior of the paddlers on this river.  We witnessed people pulling each other on boats, which ended up in a crash, throwing trash in the river and drinking while paddling. The students believe there might be an educational campaign about canoe  and kayak safety in their future. For this small group of young people, this is just the beginning of participating in a real hands-on science that could lead to real improvements in the watershed in which they live.
